Temu’s business skyrockets: it goes from $290 million to over $92.5 billion in merchandise in just 3 years

Temu has rapidly multiplied the volume of merchandise sold through its platform in just three years. The marketplace went from recording a gross merchandise volume (GMV) of $290 million in 2022 to approximately $92.514 billion in 2025, according to ECDB data compiled by Statista. This growth places the Chinese-founded company among the major players in global e-commerce, despite having launched its international expansion only in September 2022.

The figure represents an increase of more than 300 times compared with 2022 and illustrates how quickly Temu has managed to scale its international marketplace model.

The metric used by Statista is Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV), which refers to the total value of merchandise sold through the platform. Therefore, the $92.514 billion should not be interpreted as Temu’s direct revenue, but rather as the value of products sold through its marketplace.

Temu Grows From $290 Million to More Than $92 Billion

The evolution of GMV shows that growth was not limited to the company’s first year of operations.

In 2022, Temu recorded approximately $290 million in GMV. By 2023, that figure had surged to $14 billion, nearly 48 times the previous year’s level.

The next major leap came in 2024, when merchandise volume reached $53.73 billion. Finally, in 2025, Temu reached approximately $92.514 billion.

Between 2024 and 2025 alone, the increase amounted to approximately $38.784 billion, equivalent to growth of around 72%.

And growth could continue. Estimates included in the report point to GMV of $125.309 billion in 2026 and $148.399 billion in 2027. As these are projections, the last two figures do not yet represent actual results.

If the 2027 estimate materializes, Temu will have multiplied its GMV by more than 500 times in five years.

Temu Is Still Far Behind Amazon in Size

Rapid growth does not mean that Temu has caught up with the world’s largest marketplaces in terms of merchandise volume.

In Statista’s 2025 global ranking, Amazon led the market with GMV of $847.35 billion. Pinduoduo followed with $780.45 billion, while Douyin reached $656.45 billion and Taobao recorded $584.84 billion.

Tmall, JD.com, Kuaishou, Walmart, and Shopee also ranked ahead of Temu. Temu recorded approximately $92.51 billion, followed by Shein with $83.48 billion.

As a result, Amazon still handled more than nine times Temu’s merchandise volume in 2025. However, the Chinese platform has already surpassed other international competitors, including Shein, eBay, and AliExpress, in that ranking.

Temu Becomes the World’s Most Downloaded Shopping App

Part of Temu’s commercial expansion coincides with its remarkable ability to attract users to its mobile application.

In 2025, Temu was the world’s most downloaded shopping app, with approximately 434.18 million downloads, according to AppMagic data included in the report.

The gap with its competitors was substantial. Shein recorded 166.19 million downloads, while Amazon Shopping reached 152.55 million. Meesho registered 131.98 million and Flipkart 100.27 million.

Temu maintained its leading position during the first quarter of 2026, with 75.7 million downloads, compared with 37.79 million for Shein and 33.61 million for Amazon Shopping.

However, another indicator in the report suggests that the pace of user acquisition is slowing. Temu’s annual downloads declined from approximately 621.36 million in 2024 to 425.30 million in 2025, according to another AppMagic data series compiled by Statista.

Mexico Becomes a Key Market for Temu’s Growth

Within its international expansion, Mexico holds a particularly important position.

In January 2026, the United States accounted for 28% of Temu’s global downloads, while Mexico ranked second with 19%, ahead of Brazil, which accounted for 15%.

The Philippines followed with 9%, Colombia with 7%, France and Germany with 6% each, the United Kingdom with 5%, Turkey with 3%, and Pakistan with 2%.

Together, Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia accounted for 41% of the global downloads included in the measurement, highlighting the growing importance of Latin America for the marketplace.
