Marketing departments are no longer the primary decision-makers responsible for driving artificial intelligence adoption within companies, despite being among the departments that use this technology most frequently to analyze data, produce content, and optimize campaigns.

In 59% of organizations, CEOs, presidents, and founders control the adoption and integration of artificial intelligence, according to Statista’s Marketing Worldwide report. Technology leaders rank second at 31%, while marketing executives account for just 20%.

The findings show that AI is no longer viewed exclusively as a tool for automating tasks or generating materials. Its implementation has become a strategic decision involving investment, data, security, compliance, infrastructure, and business model transformation.

The study was conducted between February and April 2026 by the Marketing Artificial Intelligence Institute and SmarterX. A total of 2,039 professionals participated, primarily from Australia, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Who controls artificial intelligence within companies?

Executive leadership clearly holds the greatest responsibility for AI adoption and integration. Nearly six out of 10 professionals identify the CEO, president, or founder as the person overseeing this process.

The breakdown of responsibilities is as follows:

  • Executive leadership, including CEOs, presidents, and founders: 59%.
  • Technology leadership: 31%.
  • Dedicated AI leader or Chief AI Officer (CAIO): 22%.
  • Cross-functional artificial intelligence council or committee: 20%.
  • Marketing leadership: 20%.
  • Operations leadership: 16%.
  • No clearly designated person in charge: 13%.
  • Other leaders: 4%.
  • Professionals who do not know who oversees AI adoption: 3%.

The percentages are not necessarily mutually exclusive, as implementation may involve several leaders within the same company. Nevertheless, the gap confirms that major decisions are concentrated among senior executives and technology teams.

Marketing is tied for fourth place with cross-functional councils, but trails executive leadership by 39 percentage points and technology leadership by 11 points.

Why are CEOs taking control of AI?

Artificial intelligence affects areas that extend far beyond advertising and communications. Organizations use it to develop products, automate processes, transform customer service, reduce costs, and analyze business information.

These decisions can change operational structures, employee responsibilities, and relationships with suppliers. They also involve legal, financial, reputational, and cybersecurity risks.

As a result, CEOs have taken a direct role in AI adoption. Senior management can coordinate investments across departments, establish priorities, and determine which projects should be implemented first.

Executive oversight also reflects the need to prevent individual departments from adopting tools independently. Without a unified strategy, marketing, sales, technology, and operations teams may purchase duplicate solutions or handle information under different rules.

AI also requires decisions regarding intellectual property, privacy, data processing, and accountability for errors. These issues can hardly be resolved by a marketing department alone.

Technology leaders gain influence

Technology leadership is responsible for AI adoption in 31% of organizations, placing it in second position.

Technology executives oversee infrastructure, integration with existing systems, security, and access to information. These responsibilities are essential for implementing artificial intelligence beyond experimental projects.

A tool may be useful for generating text or analyzing documents, but deploying it at scale requires connecting it to databases, CRM systems, e-commerce platforms, and internal applications.

Companies must also determine what information can be shared with external providers, how to protect confidential data, and which controls should be established to prevent unauthorized access.

Technology leadership becomes increasingly important when AI is used to make automated decisions, provide customer recommendations, or participate in operational processes.

A new role emerges: Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer

Some 22% of organizations have a dedicated AI leader, such as a Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO), to oversee the adoption of this technology.

This figure slightly exceeds the share of marketing executives and cross-functional councils, both at 20%.

The emergence of these positions shows that some companies are turning artificial intelligence into a permanent business function. A dedicated AI leader can establish standards, select tools, and coordinate projects across different departments.

This executive can also define procedures for testing models, reviewing results, and documenting decisions. Such practices help prevent implementation from depending solely on the individual enthusiasm of certain teams.

However, creating a specialized position does not guarantee success. The person in charge needs authority, a budget, and access to information to coordinate departments that may have different objectives.

Marketing uses AI but does not control corporate strategy

Marketing departments are among the largest users of generative AI tools, but this does not mean they lead adoption at the corporate level.

Within marketing, the most common applications of generative AI are data analysis and market research, each cited by 43% of professionals.

Creative development follows at 33%, while campaign optimization reaches 31% and advertising copywriting accounts for 29%.

Image generation and creative personalization each register 23%. Campaign coordination reaches 19%, customer service stands at 13%, and SEO accounts for 10%.

Less widespread applications include information classification at 9%, programming at 8%, and website development at 6%.

AI is transforming the role of CMOs

Losing direct leadership over AI adoption does not mean marketing executives are excluded from the transformation. Their role may evolve from independently selecting tools to representing consumer needs within a broader corporate strategy.

CMOs understand audiences, brand positioning, and customer touchpoints. This perspective is necessary to prevent artificial intelligence from being implemented solely as a cost-cutting mechanism.

Marketing can also identify use cases with measurable impact, including personalization, research, content creation, and campaign optimization.

To maintain their influence, marketing executives will need to demonstrate results through growth, cost savings, conversion, and loyalty metrics, while working closely with technology teams to ensure projects can operate at scale.

AI governance will determine who captures its value

Executive leadership controls artificial intelligence adoption in most companies, but no department can implement it in isolation.

CEOs can establish priorities; technology teams can ensure security and integration; and marketing can connect AI tools with consumers, content, and business growth. Legal, operations, and human resources departments also play essential roles.

The difference between the 59% attributed to executive leadership and the 20% associated with marketing demonstrates that AI is now considered an enterprise-wide capability rather than merely a promotional tool.

The challenge for CMOs will be to maintain their influence within this structure. To achieve this, they will need to combine expertise in artificial intelligence, martech, data, creativity, and business strategy.

In 2026, AI leadership will not belong solely to the department using the most tools, but to those capable of coordinating implementation, managing risks, and demonstrating that the technology delivers real business value.
