McDonald’s plan to dominate the world: 50,000 restaurants and digitally driven growth
26 de Mayo, 2026 18:25
McDonald’s has one of the most ambitious expansion strategies in the history of the fast-food industry: reaching 50,000 restaurants worldwide by 2027, supported by a combination of physical growth and digital transformation. The company, which already operates more than 45,000 locations in over 100 countries, aims to strengthen its global leadership in a competitive and constantly evolving environment.
According to data from its annual financial report, the multinational company details how digitalization, international expansion and operational innovation will be the pillars supporting this growth over the coming years.
What is the expansion strategy toward 50,000 restaurants?
McDonald’s growth is no coincidence. In 2025, the company opened nearly 2,300 new restaurants, surpassing its own development plans and expanding its presence in key markets.
This pace of expansion responds to a strategy focused on:
- Bringing the brand closer to more consumers
- Taking advantage of opportunities in emerging markets
- Increasing global sales volume
- Strengthening its franchise ecosystem
The goal of 50,000 locations implies not only geographic expansion, but also optimization of the operating model to sustain large-scale growth.
How is digitalization driving McDonald’s growth?
Digitalization has become one of the main drivers of the business. McDonald’s closed 2025 with 210 million active users in its loyalty program across 70 markets, with the goal of reaching 250 million by 2027.
This digital ecosystem allows the company to: increase customer visit frequency, personalize promotions and offers, reduce service times and improve the experience across channels such as drive-thru and delivery.
In addition, tools such as “Ready on Arrival” are optimizing order pickup, reducing wait times and improving customer satisfaction.
What role do technology and artificial intelligence play?
McDonald’s digital growth is supported by a robust technological infrastructure. Through its “Edge” platform, developed with Google, the company is integrating capabilities such as: artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT) and real-time data analytics.
These technologies are being used to automate processes, improve food quality and optimize restaurant operations, which is key to scaling the business efficiently.
How is this strategy impacting financial results?
The combination of expansion and digitalization is already being reflected in the company’s performance. In 2025, McDonald’s reported:
- Systemwide sales close to 140 billion dollars
- Global sales growth of 7%
- Comparable sales growth of 3.1%
These results show that the hybrid model —physical expansion combined with digital transformation— is generating value for both consumers and shareholders.
The franchise model: the key to the strategy
McDonald’s growth is supported by its highly franchised model, where approximately 95% of restaurants are operated by franchisees.
This structure allows the company to scale rapidly with lower direct investment, generate stable income through royalties and rent, and adapt more quickly to local markets.
In addition, interest in becoming part of the McDonald’s system continues to grow, reinforcing confidence in its business model.
What challenges does McDonald’s face on its path to global leadership?
Despite its strong positioning, the company acknowledges that the environment will continue to present major challenges, including:
- Inflationary pressures
- Changes in consumer behavior
- Competition in local and international markets
- Accelerated technological evolution
The company also anticipates changes in consumption habits related to trends such as the use of GLP-1 medications, which could influence food demand.
