FC Dallas closes out the final match before the FIFA World Cup break with the second match of their long road trip, when they face the Colorado Rapids.
The Rapids enter the weekend sitting in 11th place on 16 points in the Western Conference after a rivalry loss at Real Salt Lake. They’re also dealing with a double-game week with a US Open Cup quarterfinal against San Jose before Dallas arrives in town.
For Dallas, this match is about heading into the break with momentum instead of frustration or disappointment. Road points are always valuable in this league, but stealing some before everyone disappears for the World Cup break? That hits a little bit different.
Potential Lineup & Tactic Style:
The Rapids are still one of the trickier teams in MLS to get a clean read on. Some nights they are organized and dangerous. Other nights, tit feels like they’re one bad defensive rotation away from total chaos. Sitting in 11th place, they’ve been stuck somewhere in the middle through the first chunk of the season.
- Offensive tendencies - They have a clear focal point in Rafael Navarro (more on him in a second). Tactically speaking, the Rapids want to stay compact and attack quickly when they win the ball. They’re comfortable playing direct, especially at altitude, where games can get stretched fast. Wide play matters a lot to them, with overlapping runs and early balls into dangerous areas.
- Defensive shape - Defensively, there are still issues with this group. They can get pulled apart when teams move the ball quickly, and their spacing in transition isn’t always clean. Add in the busy week with the US Open Cup on Wednesday night, and fatigue/rotation could absolutely become part of the equation by Saturday.
Key Player: Rafael Navarro
Everything seems to flow straight through Navarro these days for Colorado.
Navarro has become one of the more dangerous strikers in the conference because of how efficient he is around goal. He’s physical without being overly reliant on strength, smart with his movement, and excellent at finding pockets of space between defenders.
The Brazilian does not need a ton of space to be dangerous, either. Once delayed rotation, one missed clearance, or half-step late on a cross and that is enough for Navarro.
Key Matchup: Navarro vs Osaze Urhoghide
It seems to be a constant highlight in recent weeks for Urhoghide to be the key matchup against the other side’s top attacker. But, this is another one worth highlighting. Both players bring size, physical play and skill that will make this matchup worth tuning in for.
If Urhoghide can stay tight, win aerial duels, and prevent Navarro from getting clean looks centrally, Dallas has a strong chance to leave this game with points. But if Navarro starts finding rhythm near goal, suddenly the altitude will become the second most annoying thing for the club to deal with.

Current form: After a relatively decent start to the season that saw the Rapids win three out of their first five games, things have been a bit rocky ever since. The Rapids have one win in their last seven games, a 1-0 win at Minnesota two weeks ago.
Where they're at in the standings: Due to the current slide in performance, the Rapids sit outside the playoff line at the moment on 16 points.
Three keys for FC Dallas
- Make Colorado defend for stretches: The Rapids are at their best when games become open and direct. Dallas needs to force them into longer defensive sequences, move the ball quickly and test their organization.
- Don’t lose Navarro in the box: It always sounds obvious to not lose sight on a top attacker, but Navarro thrives on defenders switching off even for a second. Dallas’ center backs have to stay connected and communicate constantly when crosses start flying in.
- Take advantage of the busy schedule: Colorado is going to toss more eggs in the Open Cup basket this week. That is their clearest path to a trophy in 2026, so expect a more rotated team come Saturday. Dallas should be more rested and push the tempo, especially late in the halves, and see if tired legs start opening gaps defensively.
